Simple Shifts to Create Peace in a Multi-Pet Home
Bringing a new pet into your home can be exciting, but it can also get stressful fast – especially when the animals don’t seem to be getting along.
Whether it’s dog and dog, cat and cat, or dog and cat, there’s often more going on than simple “bad behaviour.”
One pet may start to feel confident and settled. The other may begin to feel unsure, corrected, or like they’re always the one getting it wrong. Without meaning to, we can reinforce those roles.
When one pet is calm, we praise them. When the other hisses, barks, chases, hides, or reacts, we worry or correct them. Over time, one pet keeps getting the message, “You’re doing great,” while the other starts to feel like, “I’m the problem.”
That emotional imbalance can create even more tension.
The shift is to catch both pets doing things right.
Praise calm moments. Praise neutrality. Praise tiny wins – especially from the pet who is struggling. You’re not just changing behaviour. You’re helping each animal feel safer, more secure, and more at home.
